He must also carry his green card with him...that is what will get him back into the U.S. See site below and read the section on International Travel. If he no longer has a passport from his home country, he can get one at the embassy of that country in the U.S. OR...since he will be a citizen in a few months, and might not want to bother getting a passport from his country of birth, maybe you could take a vacation to the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico this time...passports are not needed...he would just need to carry his green card He needs his passport from his home country…since he cannot get an American passport until after he becomes a U.S. citizen.
