I had to bunk with a Russian once in Italy. Well, her brother found out and LOST it…!! He was like, “No, African is going to bunk with my sister!” Well, my name is Larissa… which is Russian/Greek Orthodox. When he found this out, it was like he found a missing relative in me! Suddenly I was ‘allowed’ to bunk with his sister. Russians are very traditional and big about family. And with a russian name, I was ‘in’.
I suggest you tell them that your name is Sergei! LOL

I know a black girl that went to Russia, well I don’t know her, I know of her. I saw her facebook pics and it looks like she had a good time. But she was with other people and it was for some college program. I would not go, but that’s just me. If you really wanna go, then go. Just make sure you know some locals before you go so you will not be alone, and get pepper spray and a pocket knife. You will be fine
I think you will be okay. Are you going to majors cities like Moscow or St. Petersburg? I think you will be okay in a metropolitan area…even though…you may find that the “skin heads” also flock to those areas as well. The only thing, if you are in a small town, make sure your with a group of people that you know very well, and dont venture off alone. In small towns you will find very nice people, but being black, you may stand out and draw attention. Some attention you might not want.
Russia is a beautiful country and you shouldnt let certain things or people hinder you. I found that Russian culture, like many eastern cultures are open and gracious to people who are from a different background…as long as you are respectful to them. Ive never met a Russian or Ukrainian that I didn’t like.
Be careful, be smart about your decisions…=)

I remember hearing a lot of things about African immigrants. I don’t know more than a view newsreels, but I know they have had a recent surge in neo-nazism there.

Okay,I really don’t know, because I saw a youtube clip when people who would go to Russia and the the skinheads would come and attack them out of no where. It’s scary, but it’s true and I did want to go to visit Russia, but after I saw that…it really made me think twice.
Go on you tube and look up “Russian Skinheads” I was shocked when I saw that.
